Intercultural performance and installation project on trans identityID-clash throws the exclusive nature of the gender binary male/female into question and examines other forms of gender identification. The performers are transgender people from Bangladesh and Europe. They are people who do not conform to the expectations of the gender role assigned to them at birth because they cannot relate to it.
The intercultural project ID-clash takes a look at the subject of trans identity from the perspective of various cultures. Transgender people in Europe usually lead individual lifestyles in a society caught between tolerance, rejection and taboos. “Hijra” in South-East Asia are born as men but feel more like women. However, they do not see themselves as being a member of one of these two sexes. They call it the “third gender”. They are following a spiritual tradition that gives them special functions in society. However, they lead a life on the fringes of society.
In ID-clash, two “hijras” from Bangladesh - Annonya and Katha - meet two Western transgender people, Michelle and Melissa. Their four very different lives form the basis of ID-clash. Verbal and written narrative, video projections and singing, performative and visual elements come together to form part of a walk-in installation.
The roots of ID-clash lie in Bangladesh. A gender identity workshop held there in 2010 gave rise to the intercultural project ID-clash. The first performance took place in Cologne in October 2013 with two Bengali and three Western performers.
